About the Position

The Authorization Specialist is responsible for investigating benefits and coverage to ensure services and procedures are covered by the patient’s insurance company.  Once coverage has been verified, the Authorization Specialist proceeds to submit a request for authorization via different channels, including insurance company portals.  Once authorization has been procured by the Authorization Specialist, he/she is responsible for calculating the patient’s financial responsibility and discussing said responsibility with patient before a service or procedure is rendered.  Interaction with front office, clinical staff, and insurance companies on a daily basis is necessary in order to coordinate patients’ insurance information and compete the authorization process

Shift Schedule:

  • Mon - Fri: 8am - 5pm
  • Mon - Fri 9am - 6pm

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Review schedule ahead of time to see who needs authorizations 

  • Look in ONCO EMR for the task list of requested authorizations 

  • Review task list several times a day 

  • Verify benefits and submit authorization requests according to doctors’ orders 

  • Talk directly with insurance company to review coverage of ordered services and procedures 

  • Once authorization is back: 

    •  Create financial assessment 

    • Find out patient out-of-pocket portion 

    • Call patient and discuss their financial obligation 

    • Offer financial assistance if needed by patient 

    • Communicate with nursing staff once patient is released for scheduling 

    • Note approval, including authorization number in the patient’s chart 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Communicate with patients and fellow employees Via Company Email clearly and timely 

  • Interact professionally with patients, physicians, and fellow employees 

  • Cooperate with team members to accomplish departmental goals 

  • Accept and incorporate changes or new ideas into daily work.   

  • Provide service in a timely and accurate manner to both patients and fellow employees. 

  • Understand and adhere to policies and procedures 

  • Recognize priorities and take action; make productive use of time 

  • Strive to resolve problems and conflicts in order to maintain patient care flow  

  • Any other activity as directed by the doctor, supervisor or administrator 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2 or more years of experience in insurance verification/authorization 

  • Oncology experience preferred. 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 

· Spanish bi-lingual preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to type at least 35 WPM 

  • Knowledge of business office procedures. 

  • Working experience with health insurance. 

  • Ability to operate a computer and basic office equipment. 

  • Ability to operate a multi-line telephone system. 

  • Skill in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner. 

  • Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions in English. 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and fellow employees. 

  • Must be well organized and detail-oriented. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Normal office environment. Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment. Manual dexterity needed for using a calculator and computer keyboard.
