About the Position

The Laboratory Supervisor - Flow Cytometry is accountable for the accuracy and reliability of all laboratory services provided by the laboratories under his/her immediate control. The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for day to day supervision and oversight of the laboratory operation, personnel and for monitoring processes to ensure that acceptable levels of performance are maintained.

The Laboratory Supervisor is also responsible for helping in the implementation of all area procedures and operations as well as ensuring that metrics established to measure quality, production and efficiency are strictly followed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of, and in the absence of the Laboratory Coordinator, the Laboratory supervisor ensures adequate performance of all laboratory procedures
  • Performs high complexity clinical tests by following department procedures as needed (frequency not to exceed applicable state regulations for exempt employees).
  • Presents data and/or information across all levels including the lab, clinics, and practice, and proficiently answers questions from all groups of staff, physicians, and patients
  • Recommends and endorses test methods to include validation, documentation and implementation of test systems
  • Develops and maintains detailed laboratory procedures manual to meet accreditation and licensing requirements; ensures departmental SOP’s accurately reflects the current process; updates SOP’s as needed
  • Provides direct supervision of the laboratory operation and personnel performing high complexity testing and reporting of test results by qualified technologists
  • Reports any problem cases and/or abnormal findings to the nurse or physician to ensure timely resolution and/or follow up
  • Initiates and monitors QC programs for the department; assures compliance with regulations; monitors all quality metrics and ensures that corrective actions are documented and implemented
  • Responsible for the selection, retention, and training of qualified laboratory personnel; ensures that Laboratory staff is trained and compliant with SOP’s and Skills checklists
  • Resolves technical problems in accordance with established policies and procedures; remains available to testing personnel at all times that tests are being performed to provide on-site telephone or electronic consultation
  • Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained
  • Assures that corrective actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the department’s established performance specifications
  • Ensures that all personnel meet the regulatory requirements and  have adequate knowledge of the test systems for which they are responsible
  • Attends laboratory management meetings and informs his/her staff of pertinent information
  • Ensures that technical personnel are responsive to patient requests or problems
  • Actively supports and complies with all company, departmental, and safety policies and procedures
  • Prepares employees reviews, approves time and attendance records, maintains training files and performs other administrative duties as required
  • Monitors the preparation of solutions and reagents for laboratory procedures on a monthly basis

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology 
  • At least 6 years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience
  • At least 3 years of Flow Cytometry experience
  • At least three (3) or more years experience in a supervisory or leadership role, preferred.
  • Nationally:  ASCP certification, preferred
  • Advanced understanding of general laboratory techniques
  • Ability to make sound decisions under stressful situations
  • Proven leadership and problem solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communication with all employees and patients
  • Strong computer skills to accomplish tasks
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and maintain production and quality standards
  • Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety Manual
  • Good visual acuity including color perception required for certain departments
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
